The Director General of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), Dr Paul Machocho Wanyeki, today joined the Principal Secretary for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, Dr Esther Thaara Muoria, at the two-day Principals’ Quarterly Meeting at the Kenya School of TVET to deliberate on the status of Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) implementation in Kenya.
In his first engagement with sector stakeholders since assuming office, Dr Wanyeki thanked the Principal Secretary for her continued support to TVETA and her transformative leadership in advancing the TVET sector.
He called on principals of public Technical and Vocational Colleges (TVCs), National Polytechnics and other stakeholders to strengthen collaboration with the Authority as it continues to discharge its regulatory and coordination mandate.
“Effective regulation and quality assurance require strong partnerships between TVETA, training institutions and all sector stakeholders,” was the central message underpinning the Director General’s call for collective action to strengthen the delivery of quality and relevant skills training.
During the meeting, TVETA Assistant Director for Standards Development, Paul Mureithi, presented the Authority’s report on CBET implementation, highlighting regulatory standards, accreditation, compliance, implementation gaps and proposed interventions to address emerging challenges.
The discussions allowed institutional leaders and sector agencies to reflect on progress, identify bottlenecks, and explore practical measures to strengthen CBET implementation and ensure training remains responsive to industry needs.
The meeting brought together the Director of CBET, the Director Generals of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (TVET CDACC) and the Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET), alongside principals of public TVCs and National Polytechnics.
As Kenya advances its competency-based training agenda, TVETA remains committed to strengthening regulatory standards, promoting compliance, and supporting institutions in delivering quality-assured, industry-responsive skills that prepare trainees for employment, entrepreneurship, and the changing world of work.
