The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), in partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), will today commence a virtual capacity-building programme for TVET trainers from National Polytechnics and Special Needs TVET Institutions (SNTVETs).
The training focuses on the Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) Standard and the ODeL Standard Implementation Tool, in preparation for accreditation of these institutions as ODeL Centres and successful implementation of TVET through ODeL.
The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) was established in 1987 by Commonwealth Heads of Government to expand access to quality education through distance learning and the effective use of communication technologies. COL has since played a key role in supporting countries to strengthen flexible and inclusive learning systems.
TVETA and COL first collaborated in 2023, le
ading to the review and piloting of the ODeL Standard and the development of the ODeL Standard Implementation Tool. Building on this foundation, the current partnership seeks to support the 30 National Polytechnics and 4 Special Needs TVET Institutions through targeted capacity building of over 600 TVET trainers and ODeL practitioners.
Through this initiative, National Polytechnics are expected to establish vibrant and functional ODeL Centres, enhancing both access to training and the quality of skills development in the TVET sector.
The project will also support quality audit and accreditation of institutions, programmes, trainers, and ODeL centres using the ODeL Standard, led by TVETA in collaboration with COL.
During the first phase of training, participants will be taken through the ODeL Standard, followed next week by sensitisation on the ODeL Implementation Tool.
Subsequent activities will include development and application of the Learning Management System (LMS), development and implementation of digital training content, quality audits and accreditation of the institutions, co-creation of knowledge products such as micro-courses, and the development of a practice paper on ODeL implementation in Kenya.
These activities will be carried out in close collaboration with COL, the National ODeL Centre in the Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET) and regional partners that include Nigeria’s National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and Zambia’s Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TAVETA.
This initiative underscores TVETA’s commitment to promoting innovative, inclusive, and quality-assured training delivery in line with national and global best practices.
