Today in Meru Town, the Principal Secretary for the State Department for TVET, Dr. Esther Muoria, held a series of strategic engagements with the TVET Authority (TVETA) Board and staff during their ongoing Board and Management Retreat. The discussions centered on enhancing regulation, coordination, and governance across the TVET sector.

Tour of New Meru Regional Office

Dr. Muoria, accompanied by the TVETA Board of Directors, Acting Director General Mr. Timothy Nyongesa Katiambo, and staff, toured the Meru Regional Office, which will serve the Mt. Kenya East region. She commended the Authority for decentralizing services and urged staff to intensify efforts in enforcing standards and ensuring compliance across institutions.

Closed-Door Meeting with TVETA Staff

In a dedicated session with TVETA staff, the PS emphasized the importance of aligning daily operations with the Authority’s core mandate. She challenged the team to uphold strict adherence to regulatory standards and take decisive action against non-compliant institutions. Speaking on behalf of staff, Dr. Paul Wanyeki, Ag. Director for Standards Development, Compliance and Enforcement, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage directly with the PS and reaffirmed the team’s commitment to elevating the sector.

Ag. DG Mr. Katiambo also thanked the PS for her continued support and pledged closer collaboration with her office to advance the national TVET agenda.

Strategic Dialogue with the TVETA Board

Dr. Muoria later held a closed-door session with the Board of Directors, chaired by Eng. Dr. Edward Odhong’. The Board expressed appreciation for her visionary leadership and requested support in filling key vacancies at the Authority to strengthen institutional capacity. The PS assured the Board that these concerns would be addressed within the government’s policy framework.

She further urged the Board to streamline operations, anchor training in robust systems, and explore innovative revenue-generation strategies, including efficient collection of quality assurance fees.

Official Opening of the TVETA Board Retreat

The PS officially opened the TVETA Board Retreat at Meru National Polytechnic, marking a pivotal moment for the Authority. The retreat aims to:

  • Review Board and Committee Charters for alignment with best governance practices
  • Strengthen operational workplace policies for enhanced efficiency
  • Familiarize the Board with the new Meru Regional Office
  • Reflect on the FY 2024/25 Board Evaluation conducted by SCAC

Dr. Muoria reiterated the Board’s critical role in providing strategic direction and governance for TVETA’s sustainability. She reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting the Authority in its regulatory and financial mandates.

Eng. Dr. Odhong’ thanked the PS for her unwavering support, particularly in budget allocation and policy guidance. He noted that the retreat presents an opportunity for the Board to recommit to excellence, align with the national development agenda, and reinforce TVETA’s position as a trusted steward of technical and vocational education in Kenya.
